What sets Mall of America, Minneapolis apart environmentally is that its sustainability ambitions predate the buzzword. When it was designed in the late 1980s, its engineers deliberately eliminated the need for a central heating system — body heat from visitors and lighting does much of the work — and integrated 30,000 live plants and trees to naturally filter air. Every year, this place recycles approximately 2.42 million pounds of cardboard and paper, 460,000 pounds of food waste and 120,000 pounds of glass.
